lyrics
After the chemical plant exploded
we stood by the compost
(shock and awe and wonder)
asking vaguely about air
I took video with my phone
The flames went fast
and smoke followed
then the helicopters
and the little plane
flying in little circles
(confusion, confusion)
I took audio with my phone
for further study
Eventually
we went back to work
Don’t know the procedure
It’s sad to live
on this gentrified street
with its carefully placed patches
of refinished sidewalks
repaired by obligation
by hospital money
sidewalks made of blood, of broken systems
It’s sad to live
on this street
but i love this backyard
so large
in the absence of the homes
that got ripped out
to build the highway
before i was born
My neighbors are in college
My neighbors are parked cars
My neighbors ask for money on the corner
and are all crammed into a couple of houses down the street
My neighbors are christians
their church is in real estate
their church is the landlord
it’s sign is a domain name
dot life
I don’t know who to relate to
I studied
I received communion
I bought loose cigs off strangers
on the street
They’ve paved over the mulberry trees
I’ve lived on this street almost eight years
and there is always a siren
screaming
there is always another hospital
rising
there is always an emergency
(man with a stab wound
on foot, en route, to the ER)
there is always construction
construction is something people can
see
believe in
buildings appear
out of thin air
after the chemical plant exploded
we watched it burn
because it doesn’t happen
every day
thick air
It had been a long time coming
People with certain types of privilege
can let things get out of hand
Pony told me about a building in Baltimore
that one day gave up under the weight of negligence
and collapsed on a man in a parked car listening to music
We moved into a house my parents own
people with certain types of privilege
This house is heavy with negligence
Its history is poverty
they washed babies in the basement
I saw a ghost in the closet door
Varying states of disrepair
(water trickling into basement)
Varying states of trying and failing
(my body always leaking)
Varying states of hostas
with seed heads shivering in the snow
After the chemical plant exploded
there were police
a half-assed evacuation
They walked down the street
but didn’t knock on doors
They walked down the street
sweating
belts heavy with weapons.
